Online Workshop with Elvira from Journey Out

Flora:

In cooperation with Journey Out, we hosted another online workshop with middle school students. Elvira from Journey Out shared her story as an indirect victim of trafficking, then Miranda and I unpacked our curriculum. It was especially rewarding when the students actively participated in discussions and engaged in conscious thinking on how they can use their purchasing power to fight human trafficking. In our empathy map discussion where we asked students to brainstorm how victims could feel and think when being trapped in the industry, one student even mentioned how the victims would be manipulated and brainwashed by the trafficker into fearing law enforcement. By the end of the day, I believe the students for sure learned how to defend themselves and fight against trafficking.

Miranda:

This is an unique and eventful experience overall. Everyone seemed so eager to participate, and we received so much insight from our student that Flora and I have missed or overlooked before. Our "slavery footprint" game was successful and carried on the student's interests to the discussion as well as our anti-human trafficking curriculum. I believe both sides have learned something new at the end of the day-- the students from a fairly "distant" subject, and us from their intuitive questions and responses.
